Yag Member Selected For Nsw Youth Advisory Council Shirine Nehme, a member of Council’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG), has been selected as a member of the NSW Youth Advisory Council (YAC) for 2025.

Encouraged by Griffith City Council’s Youth Advisor, Ellie Andreazza, Shirine applied to be a member of the YAC and was officially selected on 18 October.

Shirine, who is passionate about mental health and women’s healthcare, particularly in regional areas, believes that youth engagement is key to driving positive change.

“The YAC and YAG mean a great deal to me. As someone from a multicultural farming town, it is an opportunity to represent my community and amplify the voices and concerns of rural youth. I hope to advocate for my community to the best of my abilities,” Shirine said.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, congratulated Shirine on her achievement, noting the importance of youth representation in decision making processes.

“Shirine’s involvement highlights the talent and leadership of our youth. We are proud of her efforts to advocate for the young people of Griffith,” Mayor Curran said.

The 12 member YAC plays a crucial role in advising the NSW Government on issues affecting young people across the state. The YAC meets regularly throughout the year to provide advice to the Minister responsible for Youth and the Advocate for Children and Young People on matters concerning young people.

Membership of the YAC gives young people like Shirine a direct avenue of communication with the NSW Government, offering them the chance to contribute to shaping the future.

Griffith City Council’s YAG provides a vital platform for youth engagement within the community and opportunities like this one for young leaders such as Shirine. Council is proud to support initiatives such as ConnectYouth2680, YAG and the NSW YAC, which help shape future leaders.
