Griffith’s Newest Mural Showcases Local Culture And Heritage With Input From Aboriginal Elders Griffith’s newest mural is taking shape on the 9ML Drinking Water Reservoir on Scenic Hill, and it’s already proving to be an eye-catching addition to the area.

The mural, which celebrates Griffith's diverse community, is being painted by renowned artist HEESCO, known for his impressive work on silos and tanks across Australia.

Incorporating themes of water, multiculturalism, agriculture, manufacturing, and Indigenous/First Nations heritage, the mural was carefully designed to reflect the unique identity of the Griffith community. These themes were selected by Councillors to ensure that the mural is an inclusive representation of the area’s rich history and culture.

The Indigenous section of the mural features a goanna, the totem of the Wiradjuri people, surrounded by Aboriginal symbols. This design was thoughtfully developed in consultation with local Aboriginal Elders and community members to ensure authenticity and to show respect for their culture.

The Wiradjuri people are known as the people of the three rivers – the Wambool (Macquarie), the Calare (Lachlan), and the Murrumbidgee. The consultation process ensured that the mural accurately represents Griffith’s position between these three rivers. The symbols incorporated in the artwork also reflect a gathering of men, women, and children.

Despite recent rainfall slowing progress, the mural is on track to be completed next week. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to adhere to all signage around the site, including a reduced speed zone of 40 km/h on sections of Remembrance Drive and Scenic Drive near the reservoir.

For those eager to view this impressive artwork, visitors are encouraged to use the Pioneer Park car park. Please remain aware of your surroundings and stand well clear of the road when taking photographs to ensure safety.
